Learning should be FUN!

And, it’s important that we learn HOW to have FUN!

Learning FUN!

Playing games is a good way to learn all kinds of things. Why, just playing a game with your friends can teach you social skills. How do you answer these questions about how you play games with others?

1.       Do you take turns?

2.      Do you play fair?

3.      Do you encourage others to enjoy the game, too?  In other words, do you have FUN and do others like playing with you?

If you answered “Yes” to these questions, then you have learned some important social skills.

But there’s a lot more you can learn playing games. We here at SoFun® know you can learn a lot by playing our games, for example.

Play Chards® and learn:

·         How to use strategy to win

·         How to play defensively

·         How to pay attention

·         How to never give up

·         How to enjoy a surprise

And there’s so much more to learn when you play Chards. With a clever mind and a little luck and, who knows? You could conquer the board, even if you’ve never played before. Perhaps you’re not the student. Maybe you’re the teacher!

Play Parlinks® and learn:

·         Basic golf rules

·         Golf jargon

·         Golf etiquette

·         Which clubs to use on the course

·         How to keep your golf score

·         Different golf game formatsParlinks® is a great way to gain an appreciation of the golf game.

Even if you’ve never played golf before, you can learn enough to realize why others enjoy the game.

Teaching How 2 Play a Game
It’s not always easy to learn how to play a game and it’s usually best if someone can show you how it’s done. Here are some tips to keep in mind when you’re showing someone how to play a game (any game – even if it’s not ours!):

1.       Play the game yourself. Even if it’s a brand new game to you. Open the box and take out the pieces and board and read the rules. Try to figure it all out before you try to teach someone else. Try a few moves, so you see what to expect.

2.      Explain the game concepts in order. Start with the general idea and gradually get to the details. For example, you wouldn’t expect someone to know which club to use if they’ve never watched or played the game of golf, would you?

Here are some tips for teaching in order:

·         Tell them the game theme and how you win. Say something like:
Parlinks® is just like golf. You count how many strokes it takes you to get the ball in the cup. The lowest score, the fewest strokes, wins the game.

·         Teach big things first. Say something like:
The Parlinks® golf course has 18 holes. Some holes are short and some are long.

·         Teach middle things next. Say something like:
Par is the number of strokes set as a goal for you to get the ball in the cup. A short hole is a par three. A longer hole is a par four. The longest holes are par fives.

·         Teach the details last. Say something like:
Each club moves the ball a different distance. Drivers go the farthest, followed by woods, then irons, then wedges. You use a putter when you’re on the green.

3.      Practice the basics. Have them try doing a portion of the game. Select a simple set of moves and let them get the idea of how it works by trying. For example, if you’re showing them Chards®, set up some pieces on the board and have them make the next move. Tell them what they did correct and how they could have done better.

Remember – Be encouraging. Acknowledge the success. Downplay the errors.

4.      Play a practice round. If you can, have them play a short version of the game. If it’s Parlinks, have them play the first three holes. Help them keep score so they know what to do; but don’t keep the score. It’s only to teach them how.

5.      Teach as you go. You’re teaching! You’re not there to beat anyone! Play a game and show them what to do until they feel comfortable doing it themselves. Some games are easy and they’ll catch on right away. Others may take a while. Be patient, but also be ready to let go when they’re ready.

6.      Be enthused! Why would anyone want to play with someone who doesn’t act like they want to play? Put a smile on your face when you play. It will make a difference! Show some excitement. Yes, it’s FUN 2 Play!

7.      Don’t be afraid to lose. As you are busy teaching, it’s easy to let your guard down and lose the game. Laugh about it. Enjoy their win! Then invite them to play again.

8.   Play – Have FUN! That might sound simple but make sure everyone has fun. Relax and make sure others enjoy doing so too.

We encourage you to laugh – have FUN – enjoy each other!
